In the dark eons before man arose from the primordial mire, the gods made war. And the demon-thing called Azoth was hurled down by the spirits of light and imprisoned within a towering mountain. For untold millennia it has desired to escape - and to ravage the Hyborian Age of Man which had now arisen while it lay imprisoned in stone. And now, on Azoth Peak, high above the city called Shadizar the Wicked, the high priest Karanthes schemes to release the evil god. His unwitting instrument is to be Conan the Cimmerian - a freebooter, a wanderer, a thief and a mercenary. Conan knows that should he fail, his life is forfeit. But he is not aware that success will make death seem like a blessing.
